A Palestinian folk tale of justice
I found this tale in a wonderful collection Told in the Market Place by C.G. Campbell (London, 1954).

The whispered warning to the king is similar to the Roman custom of Memento Homo (Remember, you are only a man). James Boswell in his Journal attributes the same story to Philip of Macedon.
