Looking for a short tale to tell at a birthday party where the present would be a sundial, I asked the Storytell listserv for suggestions. When I began to think about what could be done with this story, I realised it was just what I required. (Many thanks, Judy.)
The best known source of this popular fable (ATU type 298) is probably Aesop.
Prof. Ashliman gives four other versions, including modern ones.
